Every year, carnival in Opatija and its surroundings begins on the Feast Day of St. Anthony on 17th January. This period, known locally as ‘the fifth season’, is a magical time filled with laughter and joy when people put on masks and become someone else. Carnival revellers have a unique opportunity to make their childhood dreams come true and become superheroes, witches, fairies or kings, even if it’s just for a day. This is a time when the town’s streets and promenades, restaurants and hotels are filled with laughter and joy.

To experience carnival in Opatija, you can attend events such as the Children’s Carnival Parade with its numerous children’s carnival groups and the ‘Balinjerada’ soapbox race of original self-made vehicles called ‘karići’ that run on ball bearings (locally known as balinjere – hence the name) instead of wheels. This crazy race is a barrel of fun for both young and old. ‘Taxi Balinjera’ is the name of a programme which enables visitors and tourists to experience this crazy ride themselves. Don’t wait any longer – put on a mask and come to Opatija during carnival!
